India, Part 10: Pre-Party Preparations

India, Part 10: Pre-Party Preparations

Saturday, we finished up early at the worksite and scurried back to the hotel to get cleaned up for the celebration that was being planned in our honor in the village. The guys put on all the fancy pajamas that we purchased in town for the event and the ladies gathered up the saris that they purchased and carried them along in the bus so that they could have the ladies in the village help get them dressed.

When we arrived at the village, all the kids came to greet us as we loaded off the bus. The ladies took turns entering the dressing room with a team of sari experts and coming out to applause and cameras popping. This took a while and by the time all the saris were revealed the sun was long gone.
One thing that was on all of our minds was our performance for the evening.  Earlier in the day, Charly let us know that we would be expected to do some sort of rehearsed number for the town. Although it would have been nice to know about this much earlier in the week, we were lucky enough to have a theater teacher among us… fortunately, a grade school theater teacher, which made her especially qualified for the talent with which she was charged.  We managed to get something resembling a coordinated number together in no time. We practiced by the empty swimming pool at the hotel before getting showered. I’m sure anyone watching our sweaty, grimy group stumbling around to music must have had a good laugh. In the end our “ladies prance about, guys make fools of themselves” back and forth routine came together as well as any number that was conceived and rehearsed in under a half-hour. More on the celebration/party tomorrow.
