India, Part 11: The Celebration
Posted on 31. Jan, 2008 by Rob in Uncategorized
After the ladies were duly saried and we were presented with flower necklaces, we walked in a procession led by a local drum trio to the gathering place in the village – basically a big slab of concrete, where the entire town had gathered. There were probably around 500 people sitting around the “performance area” and there were plastic seats arranged for us along one side of the open area in the middle.
Speeches were made, performances were performed (see the photos) and photos were taken.
After the festivities, we bid our farewells and made our way to the bus.Â
There was a certain amount of melancholy aboard the bus as we pulled away and yelled our last goodbyes to the waving children and their families, but the trivial heartache was washed away by the sense of accomplishment that we had earned.
It was a good week.
