India, Part 14(!?): Mamallapuram, Day 1

We arrived in Mamallapuram. Originally, my plan was to leave here in a couple of hours with Sarvin and stay the night in Chennai so that we could meet up with some of his college friends and stay the night. Our flight left in the evening the following day. However, once I got a look at Hotel Sea Breeze, where the rest of the team was staying for the night, my plans changed. I bid Sarvin adieu until the next day and rolled my luggage to my room.Â
Hotel Sea Breeze is basically a rustic beach resort. There’s nothing fancy about this place. In fact, they use padlocks on the doors and there are no phones in the rooms, but it does have one thing going for it… the beach.Â
After lunch, we bid farewell to Charly, Fred, and Minji. Charly was headed home to Chennai and the others had flights to catch later that day. After seeing them off a group of us banded together and try to find the stone-cut monuments and temples for which the town is well known. After a bit of aimless walking and window shopping we managed to find a couple of the features – some wall carvings and a giant boulder known as “Krishna’s Butter Ball”. A well meaning stone carving student offered to take us on a tour of the area which he said would take around 45 minutes. Weighing on us was the fact that the sun was getting low in the sky and we had yet to visit the beach near the hotel, so we asked him for the quick version of the tour. 15 minutes later, we were in an auto-rickshaw on our way back to the hotel where we changed into our swimming gear. We swam (women too this time) and played cricket. Once the sun set we walked up the shoreline to Bob Marley’s Beach Cafe. Their menu was limited – one brand of beer and breakfast food – including crepes…. so crepes and beer it was.
We walked back to get cleaned up for dinner. Hari made arrangements with the hotel restaurant to set up tables near the beach for dinner. Good call. Dinner by the ocean by candlelight for the remaining team (about 16 of us), the last night in India for most of us.
